Guide
SEO and AI search, explained
A plain-English guide to how search works now, why AI has changed the game, and what it takes to become the brand Google and AI assistants recommend.
For years, getting found meant ranking on Google. That still matters, and now there is a second front. People ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, get one answer, and act on it. This guide walks through how both work, in plain English, and what you can do about it.
What SEO actually is
SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the work of helping search engines understand your site so they show it to the right people. It comes down to three things: a site engines can read cleanly, content that answers what people are searching for, and enough trust and authority that engines pick you. Google lays out the fundamentals in its Search Central docs.
What AI search is
AI search, sometimes called answer engine optimisation or AEO, is being visible inside AI assistants. Instead of a page of blue links, the model reads the web, decides who to trust, and gives one answer with a few sources. If it trusts and quotes you, you win the customer. If it does not, you never even show up.
How is AI search different from SEO?
They share a lot of DNA. The same clean foundations, genuinely useful content and third-party authority that help you rank also help an AI model trust and quote you. The difference is that AI gives one answer, not ten links, so being the recommendation matters more than ever. We go deep on this in our Answer Engine Optimisation guide.
How models decide who to recommend
Broadly, AI assistants favour brands that are:
- Technically easy for their crawlers to read and understand
- Clearly the best answer to a specific question
- Backed by third-party mentions, reviews and citations they already trust
- Fresh, and kept up to date as the models change
The four pillars we install
This is exactly what we build into a brand so it becomes the answer:
- Technical foundations an AI crawler can read perfectly
- Content that answers the real questions your buyers ask
- The authority and reputation signals that make you the safe recommendation
- Weekly measurement, so we always know it is working
You can see how we run it end to end on our service page, and the results on our work page.
Where to start
The honest first step is knowing where you stand today. We run a free diagnostic that maps your current visibility in Google and across the AI assistants, and shows you the gap worth closing. If you serve a specific city, we also have pages for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
SEO and AI search, answered
Is AI search replacing SEO?
No, it is stacking on top. Google search is still huge, and AI answers are growing fast. The same foundations serve both, so we build them together as one system.
What is AEO?
AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. It is the work of becoming the brand AI assistants like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews recommend and cite.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
Foundations land in weeks, and visibility compounds from around 60 to 90 days as models re-read the web and your authority builds.
